US college basketball star Kevin Ware recently suffered a leg injury described as the worst ever seen.
Falling awkwardly, he snapped the bones in his shin, with one of them visibly sticking out through his skin.
And crocked Kevin is not the first star sportsman to stun fans with an eye-wateringly gruesome break, sprain or tear.
The sports world has to deal with awful accidents on a regular basis — and many of them are caught on camera.
Here we take a look at the most shocking - but be warned, they get worse.
Henrik Larsson
This shocking snap shows Swedish striker Henrik Larsson after his leg was broken while playing for Celtic against French side Lyon in the UEFA cup.
Wilfred Bouma

11. Preston Burpo

Although he made a full recovery, the injury effectively ended Burpo's playing career.

Mark Hominick
Mixed Martial Arts fighter Mark Hominick looks as if he has taken one hit too many in this shocking shot.
Evander Holyfield
Heavyweight champion Mike Tyson bit a chunk out of rival Evander's ear - and his own reputation - back in 1997.
Tyson was disqualified for the infamous act.
Gary Mabbutt
Spurs star Gary Mabbutt was forced to wear a mask after clashing with Wimbledon’s John Fashanu in 1993.
Djibril Cisse
France international Djibril Cisse shocked football fans around the world when his leg twisted under him in a warm-up game against China prior to the 2006 World Cup.
David Busst
David Busst’s career was ended by the complications surrounding this terrible break, sustained while playing for Coventry against Man United in 1996.
Corey Hill
Mixed Martial Arts are certainly not for the faint-hearted, as this gruesome snap of Florida fighter Corey Hill shows.
Many could hardly bear to watch this footage from 1989 when ice hockey goalie Clint Malarchuk had his neck sliced open by an opponent's skate.
The full footage is too gruesome to show - but the shock in the commentators' voices tells its own story.
All athletes featured here went on to recover from their injuries, although in some cases, where mentioned, their careers were ended.
